H1N1 Flu Vaccination Information:

H1N1 Update 11/13/09 (scroll down for vaccine info):

We have experienced confirmed cases of H1N1 throughout the Huntington Beach Union High School District. We continue to track absenteeism information and wanted to make you aware of the district’s protocols for handling reported cases.

  • The school nurses are currently tracking absences and reasons for absences for staff and students at each site via the assistance of school staff
  • Currently, there are two factors that indicate action needs to be taken at a school site:
    • 1. if absences reach 10% of an individual schools site’s average daily attendance
    • 2. a cluster of students are identified as being absent (a cluster is 20% or more of a group)
  • If 1 or 2 occurs, the school nurse contacts the Orange County Health Care agency for advisement on how to proceed with the current situation
  • The District office is then notified
  • The Principal, in coordination with the nurse and health services department initiate the next steps. A letter will be sent home to families informing them if there is a large increase in absences.
  • Students or staff who exhibit a fever (≥100°) or flu-like symptoms will be sent home. Students and staff are asked not to return to school or the office until after 24 hours of being fever free without the aid of fever reducing medicines.

H1N1 Plans

by Van W. Riley, Ph.D., Superintendent,
Huntington Beach Union High School District

I am pleased to announce that the Huntington Beach Union High School Nurses in partnership with the Orange County Health Agency will be offering FREE H1N1 (swine flu) vaccination clinics to all interested high school students enrolled in our school district. The clinics will be held every Tuesday that school is open throughout the months of November and December. Please note the schedule below:

H1N1 (swine flu) Nasal Spray Vaccine Schedule 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday, November 3 Ocean View High School
OVHS students only, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, November 10 Westminster High School
WHS students only, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, November 17 Marina High School
MHS students only, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, December 1 Fountain Valley High School
FVHS students only, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, December 8 Huntington Beach High School
HBHS students only, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, December 15 Edison High School
EHS students only, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.

The H1N1 inactivated flu shot is approved for individuals ages 2 through 64.

Once the CDC expands the availability of H1N1 flu vaccinations beyond the recommended high risk groups (children ages 2-24, health care workers, pregnant women and caretakers of infants under six months of age), HBUHSD staff may attend any of our school-based vaccination clinics from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. More detailed information can be found at this link: H1N1 Flu Shot Vaccine.

All students will need an ID and parent consent form signed. Furthermore, the Orange County Health Agency Nurses will require a questionnaire to be filled out before students can be vaccinated. Vaccine Information Sheets, required questionnaires and consent forms will be available at all the sites and on websites prior to the clinics and at the clinics.

I look forward to providing vaccination clinics to our students and staff so that the obstacle of illness does not impact what we do best, educate our young people so they can have successful futures. I want to thank all staff and community members involved in making these clinics possible as it is a large undertaking in these busy days.
